Well, maybe. It killed a client of mine's system yesterday, with an error that's generally caused by a program that expects the Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 running on a system which only has MDAC 2.7. So, I recommend you get and install that first. It's free and fairly small - about 5MB.

The page is (in theory) here and the actual file here. If they don't work, go to http://www.microsoft.com, pick "downloads" and search for "MDAC".

Then, backup your system. This can fairly be considered utterly imperative now, I'd say. I've just spent 8h completely reinstalling a system and all its apps and drivers -- and this is a machine I reinstalled a month ago, with backups of all the drivers and patches and everything to hand, plus all the CDs and license keys. EIGHT HOURS. And it's a not a very complex config.

This might help:

It's a Linux equivalent of PartitionMagic and so on. If you're careful it'll let you make a complete backup of your hard disk(s) onto another drive, if you have one spare. If you don't, you'd better at least backup all your data and be prepared for the possibility of a reinstall. If you have the tools, I'd recommend PowerQuest DriveImage for a backup - or a Maxtor OneTouch USB2 hard disk, which is about the quickest, easiest way to backup a PC.

Don't put it off. If you are running XP, you're going to have to install SP2 at some point. If you're not running XP, then unless you're on a fully-patched version of Windows 2000 or you're on a very old PC, you probably ought to be.

Good luck!
