I don't do poi myself and to be honest have no wish to, but my mate Ben Dessau, unexpectedly, does, and he's organizing a 10h continuous poi effort.
I'll quote him now:
On Sunday 9th November there is to be a 10 hour Poi - a - thon extravaganza with:
• 10 hour non stop poi
• Fire poi
• Live music
• DJs
• Raffles
• Art Workshop
• Juggling,
• Face Painting
• Beauty Pampering
• Bubbles
• Balloon Magic
• Beer
• Food
To Raise money for Trust4Jaia - a trust to raise money to raise awareness & help fight Group B Streptococcus (which sadly took the life of my friends Lara and Rob's baby - some of you may remember Lara and Rob from Glastonbury 1½ years ago).
It's at the Market (ex-Firkin) pub in Greenwich on Sun 9th November from noon to 11pm.
And I'm organising the poi - for my sins.
So you can sponsor me if you like and come along on the day for a fun day. And if you do poi or know people who do poi then let me know and I'll put you down for a poi session.
Some contact information and more about Trust4Jaia ...
Please help us to raise money for TRUST4JAIA, recently established to increase awareness of the GROUP B STREPTOCOCCUS (GBS) virus. One in 3 people are carriers of this, the commonest cause of life threatening infection to newborn babies in the UK.
Trust 4 Jaia is a not-for-profit organisation founded by 3 parents, 2 of which lost their baby at just 20 minutes old to GBS. Their primary aim is to raise awareness of the unfamiliar virus, which affects around 700 babies every year (1 in 1000), of which 100 will sadly die.
Another is to promote the request of having a test done to detect the virus. Currently there are only two tests available in the UK, neither of which are done routinely, unlike in several other countries worldwide. The first test is available on the NHS (which is largely unknown about) and is free, but only approximately 50% accurate. The 2nd test, which is available through OmniLabs, is done privately, is 95% accurate and costs just £18.
In the long term, we hope to have the ability to make first contact with parents-to-be at antenatal classes, warning them of the dangers of GBS and also to inform them of the testing/support facilities that are available.
We aim to be constantly raising awareness of GBS, alerting people to the virus.
Trust4Jaia.org
With Trust4Jaia.org we hope to provide a site where people can volunteer, find information, support and share their own experiences connected to GBS, whether it be posting a memorial to a child they have lost to GBS with an account of what happened, to getting in touch with a likeminded person in their local area.
