I regularly see and hear people (here and elsewhere) whinging about popups, or the difficulty of finding, say, 2 times at once from Nation Rail's timetable page, or other niggles.

There's one simple reason. They're using a lousy browser. I refer to Microsoft Internet Explorer. It's a piece of rubbish, years out of date, slow, clunky, insecure, poorly and dangerously integrated into Windows and missing several crucial features that every other modern browser has.

But there are better answers. Opera is good, but costs money.

<a href="http://www.opera.com/">Opera</a> is good, but costs money. <a href-"http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp">Netscape 7.1</a> is excellent, feature-rich, does email and newsgroups better than Outlook Express, is immune to "Microsoft viruses" and has integrated spam-filtering and pop-up ad blocking. It's also completely free.

But if you use IE and just want a better replacement, then a direct replacement is available today. It's called <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/">Mozilla Firebird</a> and the new version, 0.7, came out yesterday.

It's small, fast, sleek and powerful. It is immune to "Windows viruses" - and it also works on MacOS X and Linux. It's got pop-up blocking. It has tabbed browsing that works like a dream and is, for my money, better than Opera's. It has no cruft: no email, no chat, no news, no web editing, just the Web.

And it's free. No ads, no sponsorship, no eval period, no registration. Costs nothing. <i>Gratis</i>.

If you're not using a work computer where you can't install software, you have no excuse. Stop whinging, stop using the crappy free thing you got with Windows 'cos you're too lazy to change, get Firebird today and find out how the Web ought to feel.

And for the odd pathetic shower of an online bank or supermarket who got ripped off by a bunch of incompetent fly-by-night "web designers" and have an IE-specific site, you'll still have IE there for such online cesspits. Why, I've needed my copy two, three times just this year!
