Goodbye, Candice

ignatzz to tell me that chorleycakes - AKA Candice Goodwin, AKA candice@cix - has just died, around 1pm this afternoon.
She discovered very suddenly that she had bowel cancer in 2004. It was operated on - she had a major bowel resection - and after a long bout of chemotherapy, she seemed to be clear, but two years later a new tumour, possibly even a completely new cancer, was discovered. She had another operation to remove the new tumour, leaving her with a stoma this time, but it had already metasticized into her liver and that was inoperable. She was pretty philosophical about it; her main ambition was to make it to her daughter's birthday in April. She didn't.
If you ever read the IT press, especially the business IT press, you may well have read her stuff: she was once a regular contributor to various magazines, including titles like Computing. She gave up freelancing about five years ago and retrained as a teacher, which she both enjoyed in parts and also at times hated. She said it was well worth it, though.
Some of you that never met her might have been touched in some small way by her; the bed in my spare room thatuon and sinnymaker both slept in was from her, as was the fruit in the blackberry vodka with which I incapacitated some of the CIX Barbie a couple of years ago.
She was a good laugh, a good friend and a good person. Cynical, good-humoured, a great lover of gossip, curry and vegetarian food, despite not being a veggie herself. I first met her through the CIX veggie conference and its regular meets for dinner.
As she was recovering from the first round of operations, she lost masses of weight, which in some ways she loved. She certainly flashed a fine pair of legs around at that time. Later, to her alleged dismay, it all came back. She went out with Philip - the aforementioned "ignatzz" - for several years, but more recently was dating my mate Steve "Crash" Craddock. My sympathies go to him and to her family, especially Max and Esther.
