It's about time for one of my increasingly-regular steps off the wagon, as on Wednesday evening next week I shall be celebrating turning 39. I fancy doing this with some Belgian beer, as that's the way my tastes are increasingly leaning the less ale that I drink.
The question is, where?
I am somewhat tempted to return to the Dovetail in Clerkenwell again, as that is a splendid place. Expensive but the 2004 bash seemed to go all right!
However, that means repeating myself, which is, arguably, boring. There is their other one, the Dove, but it's in Bethnal Green which isn't even remotely convenient for me or most other people.
A new option is the Lowlander in Drury Lane in Covent Garden. I have not yet tried this myself. Has anyone got personal experience?
I am not drawn to Belgo or Bierodrome - they strike me as far too trendy and fake and I am not remotely interested in eating moules nor even steak frites. (Ick!)
The Beer Circus in Croydon is also a splendid place, but I know that lots of you North, West, East and non-Londoners will probably complain about going all the way to Croydon. (Even though the Circus is only about a ten minute walk from East Croydon station, which is quicker to get to from Central London than about 80% of the Tube system.)
I am rather curious about the Czech & Slovak Club in Hampstead but I don't believe they have any draught beer, nor much I can eat.
Thoughts? Recommendations?
For tonight, as the nearest free weekend, the tentative plan is the Brockwell Park fireworks display followed by a beverage in the Jerusalem Tavern.
