And now for something completely different.

One for the techies.

I've been experimenting recently with building custom install disks for XP and Win2K, with all the service packs pre-installed and so on. I'm also experimenting with removing some of the useless junk that MS includes, such as Outlook Express (I'd rather give 'em Thunderbird), Windows Messenger (op. cit. Gaim), Windows Media Player (iTunes or something, maybe EAC/LAME+WinAmp), Windows Movie Maker, removing the themes and so on.

For this kind of thing, NLite is invaluable. You can do all sorts of interesting things, like presetting the licence key, disabling options, setting your own default views and so on. You can take a bare i386 directory and make a bootable installation CD. Or, given an existing install CD, copy the files onto disk, tweak it, slipstream fixes, and then make an ISO of a new bootable install CD with your chosen settings and tweaks.

But here's one that's new to me: an unofficial post-SP2 SP for XP, along with unattended installers for some useful tools like Acrobat 8 and the Java VM.
