This has been vexing me for more than a year. I read a fascinating piece by a rich superyacht owner and admirer of Patrick O'Brian who had, by way of thanks for all the novels, invited the author for a cruise on his boat, and who was astounded to learn that this great writer and authority on matters nautical had little to no idea of the realities of sailing, despite his claims to the contrary; alas, however, I was unable to rediscover the piece via searching, as I lacked enough unique keywords, such as the name of the man or of the yacht. (This sentence length brought to you as a minuscule tribute to the most daunting opening paragraph I have ever read, that of The Far Side of the World, which I shamefully confess I still have not finished.)

Now, with the clue garnered from a link of [livejournal.com profile] sbisson's that he was Tom Perkins, I have it. It is here - the same piece, but a different site and sadly sans pictures.

Enjoy.
