[Geek] Budget servers
Jan. 14th, 2004 11:05 amI'm trying to find some prices for basic servers for a couple of clients.
So far, I've got some specs from Dell (about £799), Solidisk (£560) and I'm also looking at Evesham, DNUK and Big Red, who fall in between the two.
Dell can only guarantee compatibility with Red Hat 9, which isn't much help. The machines are planned to run e-Smith, AKA Mitel SME Server, a dedicated server flavour of Linux.
What I'm after is something with a budget chip - a slow P4 or Athlon - about 512MB RAM and hardware RAID driving two mirrored IDE hard disks of around 80GB. I feel AMD processors offer much better price:performance than Intel, but few people offer AMD-based servers.
Any comments, recommendations or caveats from the techies out there?
