The Lessepsian Invasion
Nov. 30th, 2008 07:18 pmOn an idle stint of Wikipedia browsing, I was studying the list of species that are invading the eastern Mediterranean through the Suez Canal now that the salinity of the Bitter Lakes has stabilised. Formerly hypersaline endorheic lakes, they've been gradually diluted down to Red Sea levels by the flow of water from the slightly higher and slightly saltier Red Sea, so now, hundreds of fish species - and all manner of other marine life - is making its way through the canal.
But amongst all these Latin-named fish species, with photos and the odd line-art sketch, I was taken aback a little by the illustration of the Daggertooth pike conger...
