Cheap association
Jun. 11th, 2008 01:20 amA friend of mine in Paris sent me a link to an amusing product from a weirdly-named Basque website. One of their other images I find vaguely disturbing... It's a cow in the classic Marilyn skirt-blowing-up pose, revealing her udders. Somewhat reminiscent of the whole disturbing world of the Furries, as I commented to him, which led him to mention an old computer game which is surely one of the very few to offer a Fremen translation.
So I'm off to see what Wikipedia says about the Fremen, which leads me to looking at the etymology of sietch, which, it emerges, is possibly from the Siq, the entrance to the ancient city of Petra (where
mr_flay & I were considering visiting, a couple of years back), which leads me to learn that it was memorably described as "a rose-red city, half as old as Time".
Which is clearly the origin and inspiration for the "half as Golders Green" line in Balham, Gateway to the South.
I find this chain of associations rather wonderful.
