I am back. Mostly.

Still no voice service - Bulldog is having problems there - but my new broadband service became active today. Or at least after their last rather apologetic "we don't know what's wrong" call, I tried it again today, and it worked. Home number is redirected to the mobile, for now. Bulldog gets 10/10 for effort, at least; since I told it I couldn't get mail, it has phoned me regularly with status updates ("er, we don't know quite what's wrong, but we think it's BT's fault") and at least the fun bit of the service is online.

By all the *gods* my downloads are fast now! I was able to download 3 movie clips (no, not smut; of Steve Jobs introducing the Mac in 1984, since you ask) by Bittorrent at over 100KBps /each/ - simultaneously. Tests report between 2.5Mb/s and 4.5Mb/s. As I speak, I am chatting to a mate in America, too.

If you'd told me ten years ago that I'd have had a private home Internet connection at about the wire speed of original thin Ethernet, I'd have just laughed at you. And wanted it *desperately,* of course. Quite amazing, really. Ordinary surfing's not noticeably faster - many sites are now constrained by their speed, not mine - but downloads /fly./ Going to a news site like The Inquirer and opening 20 or 30 stories in tabs behind the main page [picture a thumb to the nose to Internet Explorer users here] and they're all opened before I can switch to the first one. More a change of /degree/, going from 576Kb/s to ~4000Kb/s, but a jolly pleasant one.

I think I am going to have to invest in some backup media. I can see some serious downloading coming on.

Plus ~400Kb/s /upstream./ I must put a home webserver online. I have a part-built Debian box in mind, ultimately, but it's not done yet. I may put the venerable PS/2 Model 80 online first. It's not doing anything. Anyone know any good simple free 32-bit webservers for NT 3.51? I don't think it'll run Apache or anything...

But I've been offline all week, basically, so I'm not going to try to catch up on LJ and all. If I've missed any important announcements, mail me or something? CIX is fine.
