You might be amused by this post from [livejournal.com profile] hddod and not in fact [livejournal.com profile] poppy who is, AFAIK, no-one I know, although at least 2 other people have made the same mistake and beFriended them.

Hell, with that, I'm happy, you can all read it and suffer. I've found a distro that will not only boot on my dual Athlon but correctly installs and configures all the hardware, too. Mandrake 9.1 and 9.2 boot but can't use the network or sound or 2nd monitor; Morphix boots but sees sod-all except the display; almost nothing else will boot at all. But SuSE Pro 9 does. Everything worked 1st time, except the network card, and to my utter amazement, that just started working on its own after a reboot. I am now posting through Konqueror under KDE 3.1. I am really quite happy about this. Now to install Mozilla or similar and write something just to see if the rich text editor works... 'Cos it doesn't on this.

I'm enjoying this, so sod cut tags, you can all suffer acute nerd-related boredom.

Installed Mozilla 1.4 - it's on the SuSE CDs. It works - but as if running on a 386. No, really, trust me on this, I still HAVE 386s. I even use them occasionally.

So grabbed Firebird 0.7. It works, first time, and goes like stink - but the fonts aren't anti-aliased, which normally I wouldn't care about but on this silky-smooth desktop looks ugly as hell. Ah, well. Does the job and is even fasrter than Konqueror, which is no slouch. I just don't get along with Konqui. Never did. It always utterly amazed me. The worst, most unpopular feature of IE4 was that it was also the Windows shell as well as a browser. And what did the KDE team do? They copied that. Madness.

Kopete works for AIM, MSN, ICQ & Yahoo!, and I've been chatting with a couple of mates. OpenOffice is there for earning a crust. Flash plays and Realplayer is here too.

The kLuJe KDE Livejournal client doesn't, though. It depends on about 8 things I haven't got and YaST is too dim to resolve them. I want APT-GET, dammit. Hmmm. Wonder if I can install it?

And I wonder too if I can get CrossOver Office from my copy of SuSE Linux Office Desktop to install, then I'll have my CIX reader and I'll be largely set for day-to-day use.
