I am given to understand that there is a popular televisual entertainment called Stars in their Eyes or some such, in which hapless punters are costumed and lip-sync to sad old 1970s pop records, or something.

Well, tonight, Matthew, I am going to be... [livejournal.com profile] ianmcdonald!

"Heye neye, brine keye..."*

Er, or something. Business has suddenly got rather hectic - which is good - and I was onsite at a client tonight from 7 to 10 or so. In the middle of which, I get a phone call from [livejournal.com profile] suaveswede, who instructs me that I am now a famous SF author - to be specific, Ulster's greatest living same - and hands the phone to a very starstruck friend of his who lavishes praise upon me for a short story I've never actually even read.

I didn't even have enough warning to don my (reasonably convincing) "Norn Iron" accent. (My dad was a Belfast man; I can fake it reasonably well, for an Englishman. [livejournal.com profile] uon can attest to this.)

Apparently, [livejournal.com profile] autopope wasn't answering his phone or it might have been Charlie pretending to be a famous SF author. ;-)

I do actually know Mr McDonald very slightly, inasmuch as I've met him many times & drunk with him. Lovely chap, wonderful writer. He deserved a better impersonation than mine. I don't know his email address, though, so I can't tell him of my unwonted identity theft. It would be rather nifty if I could get Anders' drunken Swedish mate an actual message from the real man, or something. :-) Also, I'd really quite like to apologize. Perhaps I can do it in person at Novacon - he's often there & I plan to be.

So does the Suave Swede, actually. Anyone got a bed free & want to share a room with him? [livejournal.com profile] nolley?

In other news, my hand is not, in fact, in plaster, which is good, but it has to stay strapped up for the next 2 to 3 weeks. At least I can still use my index finger. Can type a bit & mouse, with care.

* Phonetic attempt at "how now, brown cow". Ask me for the real thing sometime, it's more realistic.
