I've been doing this online-discussion-communities thing for about 13y now - IOW, a *lot* longer than most of you lot. And I was doing Internet chat about 5-6y before that. 1 result of this is that I tend to use a lot of abbreviations. At first, when I found that most LJ types didn't understand them, I curtailed it, but now, I don't bother so much & I get asked less often - though still occasionally. Mind you, I have now gone out with someone who was born less than a year before I got my first email address. [F/X: creaks painfully in agèd fashion] Which is a bit scary. But hey.

I find them very useful, things like IMHO, IME, IOW, TTBOMK, AFAIK, AFAICR, IIRC, IIWY, IANAL, HTH, HAND, WGAF & URxAICM£5; then come the chat ones, like LOL, ROFL, [Helicopter], BRB, AFK, TTYS, TTYL, BBFN, TTFN, SYS & OMG; & there are the tech trade in-jokes, from BOFHs via Lusers to LARTs who are a PITA and won't RTFM resulting in PEBCAK errors, sometimes resulting in T|N>K. Recently I learned a new 1: FMTYEWTK or MTYEWTK.

But I /do/ like today's.

LTFG. (And no, it's not _Like the Finest Gold_.)

WTF are you on about, man?

WTF = what the fuck?

IMHO = in my humble opinion
IME = in my experience
IOW = in other words
TTBOMK = to the best of my knowledge
AFAIK = as far as I know
AFAICR = as far as i can remember
IIRC = if I recall correctly
IIWY = if I were you
IANAL = I am not a lawyer
HTH = hope that helps
HAND = have a nice day
WGAF = who gives a fuck?
URxAICM£5 = you are x and I claim my five pounds. It's a reference to some old radio show I've forgotten EDIT: I sit corrected. It's an ancient newspaper promotional gimmick. Ironic observation of identity. "You spent *how* much? FFS! UR Bill Gates AICM£5!"

FFS = for fuck's sake

EDIT: Some more to make this a handy cut-out-&-keep guide.

YMMV = your mileage may vary
MRDA = Mand Rice-Davies Applies ( = "They would say that, wouldn't they?")
IRL = in real life

LOL = laughs out loud
ROFL = rolls on floor laughing
[Helicopter] = the noise one makes. Rofl rofl rofl rofl...
BRB = be right back
AFK = away from keyboard
TTYS = talk to you soon
TTYL = talk to you later
BBFN = bye bye for now
TTFN = tata for now
SYS = see you soon
OMG = oh my god

BOFH = bastard operator from hell
Lusers = a user who's a loser. Viz, most of them.
LART = luser attitude readjustment tool
PITA = pain in the arse
RTFM = read the fucking manual
PEBCAK = problem exists between chair and keyboard
T|N>K = Unix speak. T piped through N redirected to K. T = tea, N = nose, K = keyboard

FMTYEWTK = far more than you ever wanted to know
MTYEWTK = more than you ever wanted to know about

*bold*, /italics/ and _underlined_

Oh yeah. ETLA = extended TLA.
What's a TLA?
Three-letter acronym.

And finally

LTFG

Which is, of course...

Learn To Fucking Google

I think I will be using this one a lot.

(And indeed JFGI: just fucking Google it. Ta, [livejournal.com profile] gummitch. I feel like some oral historian already.)

Head's distinctly better today, incidentally. Well enough to go and fix [livejournal.com profile] nolley's PC for him. Again. Well, actually watch it not need fixing, really, and remove Kazaa for him, which was the cause of thousands of popups and finally a crash.

Is there a modern equivalent of K++ or KLite for Windows, anyone?
