Guest post: Vegetarian Restaurants in Brno - it's quite veggie-friendly here after all! #projectBrno

My colleague Jiři Herrmann went to an impressive amount of effort to write me this wonderful list of vegetarian- and vegan-friendly places in the town, which I thought I'd share in lieu of a new post. (I've been busy. Well, quite busy. All right, I've been in the pub, but without a laptop.) It just goes to show that actually, this city (and the Czech Republic) really is quite good for we decadent Western non-meat-eaters...

So if any veg*n friends have been considering coming to visit me -- and are OK to use the spare bed in my room and my sleeping bag -- then come on over!

Vegetarian Restaurants in Brno

Rebio  - 4 venues:

Mečová 2 (Velký Špalíček shopping centre) – custom meal setup (not sure if that's how you call that officially, it's the same setup as at the one on Orlí) {Ed note: self-service, then they weigh your plate to see how much you owe them. It's a method I have only seen in a Seventh Day Adventist restaurant -- yes, really -- that used to exist near Piccadilly Circus.}

[+] a lot of space, airy, very nicely furnished (IMO), usually very wide range of foods, fairly long opening hours, conveniently placed, WiFi, you can meet Stephen there :-)

[-] a bit more expensive than most on this list, can be very noisy during peak times

Orlí 26 – custom meal setup (You've been there IIRC so you probably know)

[+] quiet, a little cheaper than in Špalíček, also nicely furnished, close to 2 vegetarian food shops and a tearoom (if you go for that sort of thing)

[-] less choice and a bit shorter opening hours than in Špalíček

Edisonova 1 (near the growing tech park which includes the new RH building) - Fixed menus

[+] possible outside seating, a bit cheaper, probably the closest on to RH building 1/2, definitely the closest to building 3(-to-be) :-)

[-] little to no choice of meals – basic, large (the same but with some extra stuff) or a salad, can be difficult to find seats during peak times, also feels a bit less friendly design-wise than the above Rebios

Holandská 1 (in the business park near the train station)

Haven't been to this one yet, but it appears to be similar to the one on Orlí

Kupé

Veveří 34

Fixed menus during lunch hours, otherwise standard à la carte

[+] Close to the city centre, oriental food (if you like it), very pleasant service, good prices

[-] Not very many seats, underground, so might feel cramped (but also cosy, depending on your preference), the meals tend to be very savoury but not very nourishing

Zdravý život

Jaselská 8

Fixed Menus

[+] Very nicely furnished, right next to a vegetarian food/alternative lifestyle shop, “happy hours” before closing time

[-] Macrobiotic (i.e. the food can be a bit plain), underground, webpages under construction

Annapurna

Josefská 14

Fixed menus during lunch hours, otherwise standard à la carte

[+] Indian (so not everything is vegetarian, but still a fine vege selection), close to 2 vege food shops, very long opening hours

[-] Indian :) , underground, not sure how good the waiters are at English (as most of them sure aren't good at Czech), can be a bit expensive, not super clean tables

Spirála – 2 Venues:

Malátova 2 (haven't been) + Příkop 6 (IBC business centre) – have been once

Fixed menus during lunch hours, otherwise standard à la carte

[+] Very affordable prices, quick service

[-] The food was a bit plain, generally felt a bit like a canteen

Vitalité: 2 Venues:

Nové Sady 25 (never been)  + Lidická 26 (Haven't been for some time)

Custom meal setup

[+] Fairly cheap, “happy hours” before closing time, right next to a vegetarian food shop

[-] The food taste and quality is (or at least used to be) hit & miss

Oáza

Slovákova 2

Fixed Menus

[+] Very cheap, the food quality is usually fairly good (considering the price), close to the city centre

[-] You eat standing up, feels a lot like a canteen, cheap food sometimes attracts unwelcome meal-fellows ;)
